Question by iamthewalrus268: How to decide between a light and ultra-light ice fishing rod and reel combo?
We are just getting started, wanting to do some general ice fishing in north-west Michigan?

If you’re fishing mainly for pan fish, ultra light is definitely the way to go. If you’re going to be fishing for walleye or some other larger game fish, you might want to get the light combo. If you can get an extra spool for the light combo, put 2lb. test on it, and just change to the light line when you’re after pan fish.

In color, from Lake Geneva, Switzerland. Funny story actually. I was lucky to catch this image of what I thought was a skilled local fisherman catching some fish on a beautiful lake. The reality is he and his wife had just pulled off the road so he could cast a few before the light faded.

Just off frame, his wife was sitting in their car yelling at him to hurry up. Attempting his first cast, just after this photo was snapped, our fisherman caught his lure between the boards in the dock. He struggled for about 5 minutes to free the hook from the wood, tangling his line in the process. He finally gave up, cut the line, and drove off with his angry wife still yelling. I got the shot I needed though!

Another version here.

get one of those little combos with the rod less than 2′ long. more like 16″. made especially for ice fishing. and ultra-light, 2lb or 4lb is definitely the way to go with beginners leaning more to 4lb test line which is still pretty light. get some little ice fishing jigs and tip the hook with a minnow, maggots, or one of many grubs available.

  45. beagle17 says:

Look up Ice fishing forums in your area, the local sharpies will guide you in your quest. Some forums even have a BST(buy, sell, trade) section and you can pick up a quality used combo for a good price. Good Luck

  46. Charles Slone says:

It depends on what fish your after. Ultra-Light gear is made for sunfish, bluegill, perch, crappie and small bass. Light Gear is made for bass, walleye and others. I assume your fishing for crappie because, crappie fishing is hot right now. So, ultra-light should be fine.Use proper bait for whatever species your after. I may have given you a better answer if you told me the species though. Good luck and hope i helped…
