Great Egret with fish in it’s beak

This great egret (Ardea alba) has just caught quite a large fish. It subsequently swallowed it with apparent ease, once it had oriented it correctly by gentle up and down tossing actions with it’s head.

It is far from usual to see an egret with a fish in it’s beak. Whilst not rare, it is not common. I have never before seen one with a fish this big.

i have one remark for your fishspecies group.
it will be realy nice to see pictures of live fishes instead of dead fish bodies. ok, this zander is taken for preparation, but the best in this sport is to take photo and to release fish back to water. C&R
Both live and dead fishes are allowed of course. There are differences in how widespread the C&R fishing is in different countries and in Norway it is definitely not as common as in continental Europe. I normally don’t catch and release, but I don’t catch more than I can eat either. Some of the fish I have in the group were caught for scientific purposes and need to be killed.
Wow, great looking fish (Zander) It looks similar to our North american Walleye species.
I saw walleye only in books and magazines, but I suppose it is similar species with similar behaviour.
